The Project for the Support for Joint Forest Management in the Kyrgyz Republic

Pilot Projects » Ortu-Oruktu pilot JFM (Issyk-Kul state, 2010)

  • Background and summary of activities

The Oruktu village occupies eastern part of Issyk-Kul forest office and its specific characteristic is low provision of population with arable lands, suitable for crop cultivation. The main occupation of the population is animal husbandry. The bigger part of pastures land accounting for 915 hectares is located in the State Forestry Fund, which leads to necessity of close cooperation between the village and the forest office. In the Ortu-Oruktu gorge is available the considerable stock of wind fallen forest, being affected by external factors the trees are becoming unfit for use by turning into fuel wood from the timber. These trees, despite of the populations need for, are rotting through on site by causing significant harm to the existing ecosystems (insects and forest deceases are increasing). Access of the people to pastures is complicated by lack of road. The constructed road will promote pasture use for cattle grazing. To create conditions for better forest management is necessary to construct the road from Oruktu village to existing stands in the same gorge. The current road, due to some local peculiarities is impassable for vehicles. As a result of road construction, the bigger part of the dead wood will be removed from forest for the needs of local population by solving some issues related to their livelihoods and improving ecological situation in the area. Both the forest office and local residents are interested in the road construction therefore all the stakeholders were involved in project implementation. The Oruktu village relies on the local residents will organize necessary workforce for performing manual works free of charge. The most important of this project is its perspectives. Upon implementation of this project there are potential new projects for cooperation of the forest office and local community related to using forest products, joint tree plantation on the forest lands and village lands.
