  • Background and summary of activities

Balykchy city located on the western edge of the Lake Issyk-Kul is famous on the particularly low rainfall and notoriously windy among the Kyrgyz Republic that the dry land like gravel desert spread on the surrounding area. Karatara national forest under the Balykchy forest office is in such arid land. Forest tenants have made a fruit cultivation on existed elm trees before the former Soviet Union that is collapsed because of deficiencies management. However, only the way of irrigation as pump up from the Chui River takes much cost, and volume of water supply is also unstable. Therefore, a major issue in promoting tree-planting activities is how ensure a stable water supply. The project built the water supply channel to draw unused watercourse from the upstream. Future, forest tenants as the local residents expect to increase its number, and the tenant plants fruit trees to earn money by the utilizing water supply system. In addition, the project also makes a forest tenant organization (established NPO) as supporters of water channel management. The organization of tenants is also aimed at not only effective utilization of water supply, but also promoting efficiency and cooperation of reforestation by each individual tenant.

  • Apricot tree planting by forest tenant

In the Karatara National Forest, individuals or organizations are lending the land from the Balykchy Forest office, have planted apricots in each compartment since 2006. The apricots already grew and lush its foliage and the fruit can be harvested in three to four years after planting plantation. Currently, approximately 200ha of the total 385ha of Karatara National Forest has been leased to 116 forest tenants. The project will develop infrastructure development and organization of the tenant due to more tree-planting activities.

  • Construction water supply channel

Untapped mountain stream flows that the water disappeared the course of the flow to penetrate into the ground in the mountains of northern Karatara National Forests. The project attentions to the small mountain stream for a new water source for the afforestation, and a water intake dam and approximately 6km water supply path were constructed. The precious water from this new water supply facilities have been supplied for tree-planting activities of the tenants.
