  • Background and summary of activities

The plains of the north of Bishkek city near the border with Kazakhstan such as wet and salty lands widely distribute unsuitable for cultivation area. The project has established a JFM pilot project on the unutilized land like the unsuitable for agricultural production for the first pilot project. Forest users as local residents have developed tree-planting activities on assigned in each compartment where the local government (village) 40ha of land leases a forest office. The pilot also reclamation forests are managed by secondary school (attend the students age from 7 to 17 years old) of the village, and the nursery is operated by the forest office in addition to tree planting by the forest users. The project, aim to the joint forest management together with the reforestation, the community forest management, and nursery management as a land use model for similar low productivity in the region.

  • Tree planting activities by the forest tenants

The forest tenants have used 36ha of all 40ha pilot sites excluding nursery for the tree planting activities. Kyrgyz law prohibits the "sublease" to a third party therefore the pilot site where was leased from the village to the forest office, the forest tenants have been entered based on land use agreement between the forest office for carried out the tree planting activities. Currently, 18 land use agreements have been signed between the forest office and the local residents. Forest tenants level ground of their compartments, and plant the fruit trees, poplar trees, and willows. Some tenants have grown seedlings for planting on using the nursery of the forest office for planting preparation. Future, revenue from forest products as the result of these forest activities will be divided between the forest tenants and the forest office in accordance of the contract with stipulated about the profit percentage.

  • Establishment school forests ? Attempt of community forest management

The secondary school in Jangy-Pakhta village as the forest tenant has managed poplar forests where established surrounding the pilot site 4km. Future, the school can expect revenue from the forest products sales, and use of timbers and firewood extracted from forest. Income forest products will be divided between the forest offices in accordance of the contract with the stipulated profit percentage. In addition, the school forest is expected not only afforestation management but also may become a pioneer organization of a community forest management which is little-known in Kyrgyz.
